The African Institute of International Law is an independent and autonomous institute, governed provisionally by a Project Implementation Committee (PIC), pending the establishment of the Curatorium and the Administrative Board provided for in the Statute of the Institute.

The PIC comprises renowned international lawyers, diplomats and judges from Africa. This body is provisionally responsible for the development of the academic, training and research programmes of the Institute, its overall strategic direction, and administrative supervision until all the organs of the Institute are established in conformity with the Statute.

The PIC is chaired by Judge Abdulqawi Yusuf of the International Court of Justice.
